With direct link to your computer, have you asked yourself if widgets are safe to use? Just like with any Internet product, there are risks. It is just as possible to accidentally download a virus with your widget as you could opening a malicious email.

Internet: The Newspaper of the 21st Century

With the amount of use almost everyone today gets out of the Internet, it is not difficult to believe that it has become the biggest source of news for most people.  It has established its place in society through a large number of advantages it has over other forms of media, entertainment, and news.

While newspapers have been a large part of the media since the first newspaper was printed approximately 400 years ago; however, the Internet has many advantages over the traditional newspaper.  First, getting news and entertainment from the Internet is free (except for the cost of the Internet in the first place).  Second, the Internet provides a wider variety of opinions and viewpoints than any newspaper could hope to present.  Lastly, in terms of entertainment, the Internet has exponentially more entertainment sources than any newspaper, such as web comics and video clips.

The Internet is also more useful than other forms of media for many of the same reasons.  If you pay enough, you can get over 1,000 channels on television, but the Internet has over 100,000 “channels” available to everyone.  The radio can have interesting talk shows, play good music, and have entertaining contests, but most of the things that are on the radio end up being posted on the Internet soon after being broadcast.

While the Internet has obviously become the media giant of the 21st Century, other media sources still have their place.  It can be very relaxing to read a newspaper, and it is much safer to listen to a radio than to surf the Internet while braving rush hour traffic.  But as a whole, the Internet is our new best friend.

Augmenting Your Reality

Imagine what it looks like to look through the eyes of a killer robot.  If you imagined it as Hollywood presents it then you probably imagined a display the scanned things in the environment and was able to focus on people and things and could instantly find information about the target, such as a name and address.  Strangely enough, this is no longer a matter of science-fiction.  Killer robots might still be a long way down the road, but the vision described is no longer fantasy, it is an app.

Known as “Augmented Reality,” there are a few apps out and many in development for Smartphones which can bring up a display similar to the aforementioned “robot vision.”  These apps can give a variety of information, including what restaurants or bars are down a street or information about people you are looking at gathered from online sources such as Facebook and Twitter.  Augmented Reality can be used to help you remember someone’s name or birthday, find a good restaurant, or many other things.  The number of uses a person can have for Augmented Reality is only limited by his or her imagination.  And, in addition to the many personal and social uses for these apps, they also have the potential to be very useful in fields such as law enforcement, helping to identify and find criminals when other methods are not as conveniently available.  There are almost no limits to the ways that this developing technology can help countless people in ordinary and extraordinary ways.

Technology or Real Life?

Undoubtedly one of the biggest influences on the recent past has been the developments in technology.  Desktop and laptop computers, the Internet, and other such breakthroughs have changed the way that most people perform most of their routine tasks.  For much of the past couple decades it has seemed like society has more or less left the real world and ventured into the digital world; however, recently society has been taking a different direction.  No longer does society seem to be leaving the physical world in favor of the digital one, but instead people seem to be fusing the two worlds together.

Most technology until recently has been separate from the physical world.  Computers were stationary and did not leave the desk on which they rested.  Cell phones were also rather uncommon until the turn of the Century.  So, most technology required you to be sitting at a desk, within a phone cord’s length of a wall, or at least within some small area.  Now, with smart phones, laptops, and a wide variety of other developments technology has become an integrated part of the physical world.  Some people use this idea to play “Big Games,” basically video games played on a large scale in real-life, such as Pac Manhattan.  In this example, one person dressed up as the popular character Pac Man and ran around the streets of New York.  Other people wore colored bedsheets and used GPS systems and cell phones to try to capture the Pac Man.  And, new technological developments are opening up even more ways to integrate into the physical world every day.
