Internet: The Newspaper of the 21st Century

With the amount of use almost everyone today gets out of the Internet, it is not difficult to believe that it has become the biggest source of news for most people.  It has established its place in society through a large number of advantages it has over other forms of media, entertainment, and news.

While newspapers have been a large part of the media since the first newspaper was printed approximately 400 years ago; however, the Internet has many advantages over the traditional newspaper.  First, getting news and entertainment from the Internet is free (except for the cost of the Internet in the first place).  Second, the Internet provides a wider variety of opinions and viewpoints than any newspaper could hope to present.  Lastly, in terms of entertainment, the Internet has exponentially more entertainment sources than any newspaper, such as web comics and video clips.

The Internet is also more useful than other forms of media for many of the same reasons.  If you pay enough, you can get over 1,000 channels on television, but the Internet has over 100,000 “channels” available to everyone.  The radio can have interesting talk shows, play good music, and have entertaining contests, but most of the things that are on the radio end up being posted on the Internet soon after being broadcast.

While the Internet has obviously become the media giant of the 21st Century, other media sources still have their place.  It can be very relaxing to read a newspaper, and it is much safer to listen to a radio than to surf the Internet while braving rush hour traffic.  But as a whole, the Internet is our new best friend.

Downloads Getting You Down?

During the initial days when internet was launched in our city, we were very excited to get our new internet connection. We were informed that this was a dialup connection where we had to first dial the internet service provider (ISP) through the telephone system, and only then we could use the internet service. When we started using the service, we discovered that, in addition to the internet charges payable to the ISP, we were also required to pay the telephone company for use of their network to connect to the ISP.

What this meant is that the longer we use the internet, the more we pay to the telephone company, since the telephone company charges on a per minute basis, and not on a per call basis. In addition, the internet service was too slow, and many downloads took so long that it made us worry about the huge amounts we might end up paying the telephone company for hours of usage each day. And even then, some larger downloads just did not happen due to the slow dialup connection.

Several years later when broadband replaced the dialup systems in our city, we all heaved a sight of relief. All our troubles seemed to have vanished, and we could download faster, take long breaks to think and ponder with the internet still connected, without worrying about usage of the telephone network for long durations. Billing for the broadband system is based on downloads in megabytes or gigabytes over a monthly billing cycle.

There is no hassle of paying the telephone company for use of their network while using the internet. The use of broadband completely transformed our internet usage. But another shock awaited us. We discovered during the first few months that our downloads had exceeded the limit, and were charged for hundreds of megabytes of download that we had used beyond the downloads allowed by our broadband plan. This made us switch to an unlimited downloads plan at a higher monthly expense. Hope you got all the tips.
